If you read this blog regularly, you know writer Dean Wesley Smith likes taking things to extremes. Well, his latest projects are no different. We’ve got a new novel in his popular Thunder Mountain series with some extreme time travel, a new StoryBundle featuring extreme sports in science fiction, and an extremely quick turnaround for writing and publishing a novel.
So, here goes.
The Taft Ranch marks Dean’s tenth Thunder Mountain novel, itself a feat. But in this one, Dean takes readers not into the recent past but instead into the far future. Here’s the premise:
Duster Kendal knows something must be wrong when a tree blocks the road to the Taft Ranch. Turns out Lee Taft failed to return from his last trip into the past.
Duster fears the worst, that time kicked Lee into a distant and inhospitable future with no hope of return. And no hope of rescue.
A story of survival through centuries of time.
In July of this year, Julian Atkins stepped through a door 25,000 feet in the air over the New Mexico desert without a parachute. He fell all the way to the ground and landed in a net so small he couldn’t see it from where he started, and he walked away without any injuries.
He’s the latest in a new generation of daredevils who are harnessing new technologies to push the limits of human thrill-seeking and exploration.
Whether it’s the lone crazies that use squirrel suits to glide through mountain ranges at a hundred miles an hour, or people like Atkins with their top-notch support teams, or astronauts and test pilots who risk their lives to prove the soundness of entire armies of engineers, these explorers push the boundaries of what’s possible for humanity.
And we need that, especially in this most acrimonious of political seasons.
So, in the spirit of exuberance and exploration (and in honor of all the men and women who put their lives on the line in the name of fun, daring, and grand adventure) I’m curating Extreme Science Fiction for storybundle.com.
These ten books are chock-full of tales from veterans and up-and-comers from all corners of the vast science fictional universe.
WMG has three books in this bundle: Star Fall: A Seeders Universe Novel by Dean Wesley Smith, Extremes: A Retrieval Artist Novel by Kristine Kathryn Rusch, and Fiction River: Risk Takers, edited by Dean Wesley Smith. You can read more about it here. It’s available until Oct. 6.
Finally, let me talk about Star Fall for a moment. Dean blogged about this book on his website during one of his recent writing challenges. He wrote it in ten days. We turned it around lightning fast, and it’s already available in ebook (to coincide with the bundle). The paperback publishes in November.
See what we mean about how publishing moves at lightning speed these days?
So, plenty to check out. And if you’re reading this Monday or Tuesday, don’t forget to check out the final hours of our Fiction River Subscription Drive on Kickstarter. Everyone who pledges at the $5 reward level or higher now gets FOUR bonus books! Are you feeling the love? Because we sure are!
